Youth & Teens

The following classes and activities are oriented specifically for youth and teens, aged 5-18.

AQUATICS

Come learn everything aquatic! YMCA swim lessons are progressive and perfect for children to learn water skills. Participants enhance their skills in each of the following areas: stroke development, safety, rescue skills, water sports and games, and personal growth. Lesson groups are determined by the swimmer’s current ability. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Polliwog I
For children 6 and up who have not had swim lessons before. Participants may be fearful of water and cannot tread water or float independently, but can walk away from the wall and return. Your child will learn front, back and side swimming in this beginner level. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Polliwog II
For children 6 and up who have progressed through YMCA swim lessons. Your child will learn front, back and side swimming in this level. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Extra Special Polliwog I & II
One instructor per three children means more practice time and personal attention per child. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Guppy
Participant is able to swim one length of the pool comfortably on their front and back. At this level, they begin to swim longer distances and are introduced to rhythmic breathing and treading water. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Extra Special Guppy
One instructor per three children means more practice time and personal attention per child. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Minnow
Participant is able to swim two lengths of the pool using the front crawl with good and consistant rotary breathing. The progression continues with breaststroke, sidestroke, back crawl and diving. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Fish
Participant is able to complete a four-length endurance swim without rest and can perform good breaststroke. The emphasis at this level is on increasing endurance and refining front crawl, back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke. The diving progression continues. Flying Fish/Shark
Participant is able to complete a six pool-length endurance swim without rest, perform a good butterfly stroke and a flip turn. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Advanced Stroke Techniques
Refining strokes, starts, turns and techniques for competitive swimming is the
objective of this class. Participants must be comfortable with butterfly, back crawl, breaststroke, front crawl and sidestroke. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Youth Triathlon Training
Learn triathlon basics and get ready for the June 6th HyVee Hormel Kids Triathlon. Swimming, biking and running topics will be covered as well as a chance to bring it all together! Must be comfortable in the water and able to swim one length in the cool pool. We will meet in the pool April 14 & May 5, the Mississippi Room April 21 & May 12 and the running track on April 28 & May 19. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course
American Red Cross Lifeguard instructors teach skill and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course prepares participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries. Participants must be 15 years or older and pass a swimming pre-test. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and CPRPro Certifications. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Free Swimming Evaluation
Uncertain of your child’s ability? He/she can be evaluated by our aquatic staff. Please make an appointment by calling 797-3945, ext. 256.

AQUATIC WELLNESS
Join our nationally recognized water fitness team for fun and exercise in the pools. Water exercise reduces stress on the joints, strengthens and tones muscles, reduces muscle soreness, enhances circulation, and promotes flexibility. Swimming skills are not required. Classes are open to adults and youth 14 and up. Flotation belts for deep water classes may be purchased at the North Entrance.

Deep Water Exercise
A no-impact workout in deep water using flotation belts and other equipment. The balanced workout includes warm-up, aerobic, cool-down, strength and toning, and flexibility stretching. Intensity is easily adjusted for all levels of fitness. Participants must be comfortable in deep water and provide their own flotation belt. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

High-Energy Water Workout
Complete water fitness class using a variety of exercises and equipment. Activities include dance, calisthenics, walking, and kicking. Intensity and impact can be varied on an individual basis. Each class consists of warm-up, aerobic, cool-down, muscle toning and flexibility segments. Yth1 1.09

AQUATIC THERAPEUTIC

Slow & Easy (Arthritis Foundation Program)
Low-impact exercises designed for people with limited joint motion, strength or cardiorespiratory function. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

SPORTS

YMCA Basketball
A Youth Super Sports Program which emphasizes basic skills, rules, YMCA values, teamwork and having fun with basketball! Players will learn how to play the game from volunteer coaches in a non-competitive environment. Participants are placed on teams according to gender, age and school. All teams entering the league must be approved by the Sports Director. Shirt and medal included in fees. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Basketball Camp
Another fun program over the holiday break from the YMCA! Your child will brush up skills for the upcoming sessions of YMCA youth basketball. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

New! Volleyball
Our volleyball program will help your child develop the techniques and skills to play the game. We use a variety of drills and challenges to improve your ability and build sportsmanship and teamwork. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Volleyball Camp
Looking for a fun way to spend your holiday break? Participants will learn the basic fundamentals of volleyball to prepare them for junior high league play or just to have fun! The clinic will consist of drills, games, snacks and much more! Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Tae Kwon Do
A martial art that has no equal in the field for power or technique, it’s the “Art of Kicking and Punching.” The program offers self-confidence, self-discipline, self-defence and physical fitness for children and adults. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Spring Flag Football
Children are placed on teams that practice once per week and play games on Sundays beginning April 20th. Volunteer coaches set up neighborhood practices at site/time to be determined. Jerseys and medals are included in the fees. Every child gets the same amount of playing time! A mouth guard is required to participate. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Spring Youth Soccer
Children are placed on teams that practice once per week and play games on Saturdays beginning April 19th. Volunteer coaches set up neighborhood practices at a site/time to be determined while games are held outside the Two Rivers YMCA. Registration fee includes a soccer uniform and medal. New! Floor Hockey
This program emphasizes teamwork, building self confidence and having fun. We teach the fundamentals of floor hockey through various drills and games to develop positive skills, attitude and character. Groups will be divided at appropriate ages and skill levels. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

Youth Track & Field
Children will be placed on one of three teams led by volunteer coaches: Rock Island/Milan, Moline/Coal Valley, UTHS School District. Children have the option of participating in events both in practice and at meets including short distance running, long distance running, softball throw and long jump. Little Chippers Snowball Golf
Participants will learn golf fundamentals such as set up, alignment, grip, stance and swing. Instructors will teach long and short game techniques through demonstration. All equipment is supplied, but participants are welcome to bring their own. (Maximum of eight participants per class.) Yth1 1.09

Putters Snowball Golf

First Tee Golf
The First Tee is a program designed to give youth a place to learn and play golf. Beyond introducing them to the game, the program aims to provide participants with an opportunity to acquire skills that will help them lead productive and satisfying lives. Skills such as self-contol, goal setting and dealing with challenges are valuable in playing the game of golf, and they can also enhance every facet of a young person’s life. Putters
Participants will learn golf fundamentals such as set up, alignment, grip, stance and swing. Instructors will teach through demonstration. Fees include balls and equipment used during the lessons. (max 8 participants per class) Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

TUMBLING & DANCE 

Tumbling
Participants will focus on tumbling skills that will improve balance, space/body awareness, coordination and confidence. Participants are challenged based on their level of ability, maturity and motivation. This program prepares youth for other forms of sport and dance, great to keep your little one flexible and fit! Basketball Cheerleading
Share your spirit! This introductory class will expose your child to the basics of cheerleading. Participants practice cheers, chants and jumps with an emphasis on teamwork. Cheerleaders will share their spirit while cheering for YMCA Basketball Teams. Click here for schedule: Yth1 1.09

 

YOUTH WELLNESS/FITNESS

nrgZone Virtual Gym
Visit the nrgZone for a great workout while having lots of fun! Try Dance, Dance Revolution, the Arena, Sportswall, Trazer or Kilowatt for interactive, video game inspired fun. Bring your friends and compete for high score!

Youth Strength Development
Learn the principles of developing strength as you are guided through this Cybex orientation taught by one of our personal trainers. Students will learn proper lifting technique and gym etiquette. Class meets twice.

New! Youth Life Fitness Circuit Training Class
Youth ages 11 to 14 will participate with an instructor utilizing the FirStep circuit training system on the third floor of the Wellness Center. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Belly Dancing
The graceful hip drops, rolls and pivots in this dance form utilize muscle groups in the abdomen, pelvis, trunk, spine and neck, and work with the body instead of against it. It improves posture and muscle tone, flexibility, weight loss and is a great stress-reducer. Not to mention, it is a lot of fun! Now offering beginner classes. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Hatha Yoga
Ease muscle strain, promote physical strength and vitality, revitalize mental capacities and balance your emotional state of being. It is recommended that you bring a towel, small blanket or mat for floor exercises. No drop-ins. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Parent Plus 1 Yoga
Strengthen family bonds and create togetherness with the yoga practice that’s
specially designed for the entire family to benefit from and enjoy. You will engage in a series of fun poses that build communication skills, confidence and trust. Sitting relaxation poses unite the family in silence. For parents and children 5-12 years. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Boot Camp
Are you ready for a challenge? Will it be hard? Yes, but not impossible. Will you be able to keep up? Absolutely! Everyone has to start somewhere. We guarantee you will be in better shape when you are done than when you started. Bring workout mat or towel and running shoes. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Power Pilates
Pilates-based exercises for core strength using various props to challenge core muscles in multi-level planes. Classes may employ hand weights, bands, stability balls and balance balls. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Zumba
Zumba combines high energy, motivating music with unique moves that allow participants to dance away their worries. Zumba is great for the body and for the mind. Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music and dance themes. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Unlimited Cycling!
Choose any or all classes to ride, one fee covers them all. Contact the Wellness Center desk to reserve a bike for the classes you wish to attend. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Want to workout in the weight room, but not sure how to start? Let our Wellness Coaches lead you through well-planned and muscle-specific trainings that will guide you to your desired results. Choose the day and time that works best for you - 45 minute sessions for 7 weeks. You’ll have an active part in developing your own program with our help. How great is that?! Body Sculpt

Burn calories and boost metabolism with this class that works specifically on muscular strength development from head to toe. Use of handweights and other resistance methods will help isolate and strengthen all major muscle groups. Click here for schedule: Yth2 1.09

Studio Pump
This is a barbell class that strengthens your entire body. This 60-minute workout challenges all your major muscle groups by using the best weight-room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. Cardio Sculpt
Meet all of your fitness goals. Beginner and advanced participants will burn fat and firm up problem areas. Classes consist of approximately 30 minutes of cardio-vascular workout plus muscular toning and flexibility. {Cardio Blast includes cardio portions only.
